Pioneer reveals 400GB Blu-ray disc

A standard Blu-Ray disc might have enough storage space for a high-definition movie, but Pioneer is taking optical storage capacity to the next level by announcing ?the world?s first? 16-layer disc capable of holding a massive 400GB of data.
Interestingly, the new discs are similar to Blu-ray disc technology (each of its layers have the same 25GB capacity) and slight changes to the hardware on a Blu-ray drive would allow the new Pioneer discs to be used on one. The disc developed so far is only read-only, and no mention has been made of writable 16-layer discs yet. Little else is known about these discs, though more information is expected at the Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008, which is being held on the 13 July in Hawaii.

Gigabyte unveils 8.9-inch touch screen laptop

Gigabyte just became the latest in a growing list of PC makers to enter the ?netbook? market ignited by Asus late last year with the Eee PC. But while most competitors have been pretty much stuck to the same basic idea ? a small, entry-level notebook with a somewhat affordable price tag ? Gigabyte is trying something a bit different with its 8.9-inch laptop, the M912V.
Besides the less-than-catchy name, this ultra-portable laptop from Gigabyte features a touch screen display (with LED backlighting) that can rotate 180 degrees to transform from a traditional notebook form factor to a tablet PC. The M912V packs a 1.6GHZ Intel Atom processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory, and a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive offering up to 250GB of storage.

Other features include a 1.3 megapixel Web cam, integrated stereo speakers, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, an ExpressCard slot, and a choice of Windows XP, Windows Vista, or an unspecified flavor of Linux. Though availability and pricing details were not given, a report by PCLaunches.com suggests the M912 will reach store shelves this month at $699.

Windows XP SP3 to hit Automatic Updates soon

Months after its original release, the very slowly paced rollout of Windows XP SP3 is still in process. Now, after having enough time to study the issues involved in the upgrade, Microsoft is preparing to push the Service Pack again through Automatic Updates. As a token to IT admins who are worried about machines becoming mass-crippled in the event of a problem, Microsoft is offering the Windows Service Pack Blocker Kit, as well as playing up WSUS control. The company still has to publish an exact date on the release, but knowing Microsoft, it will most likely be on a Tuesday, so watch out.
You might recall Windows XP SP3 went RTM in late April. However, despite extensive planning and a staged rollout, a number of issues became evident soon thereafter under certain scenarios which has prevented its en masse adoption as it was originally intended.
